To Flash
or not to Flash...
When you consider your clients needs, the answer is a resounding no.
See how quick we came up with that answer? That's because we believe the Flash experience is not good for most web sites. Let's start with going through its good points.
Flash enabled web sites are usually high;y animated. Thats it! Apart from animation, there is nothing a Flash enabled site can do that cannot be acheived using HTML.
Now let's consider its bad points. Flash is a plugin that needs to be installed separately into a users computer in order to see the Flash site. Users who haven't got the Flash player installed will miss out on seeing your web site.
ASK YOURSELF, DO YOU REALLY WANT TO FLASH?
Flash is slow to download. Whilst you might be in town and taking advantage of high speed Internet, the fact is most of your clients are still on dial-up. Should a user really be forced into waiting up to 20 minutes in order to view your site?
Flash is spyware, albeit non-malicious spyware. Many users refuse to download Flash because it tracks details of user data.
Flash enabled websites are not search engine friendly. You might have the flashiest site in cyberspace but all search engines such as Google, Yahoo, MSN etc. will never send people to your web site because it can't access the information contained in Flash files.
Now if you really do like the thought of Flash because of its animation capabilities then you should consider having a HTML site built first as a backup to the Flash site. Users who do not have it installed can simply click the non-flash link. That way, everybody will get to see your web site.
